CriminOlly Concludes His GarbAugust With NYMPHOS!

CriminOlly has titled his latest round of book reviews, "One of these is the worst book I've read for ages..." So let's get this out of the way first: our Men's Adventure Library release of Walter Kaylin's He-Men, Bag Men, & Nymphos collection, which is reviewed in his current video, is NOT that book! Au contraire. Per Olly:

"As always, they (The Men's Adventure Library) did a fantastic job with it. This is a beautifully presented book."

Whew! And he doesn't stop there. In fact, he hits on something in Kaylin's work that I have long felt makes our Men's Adventure Library books so special:

"Walter Kaylin is almost certainly an author you haven't heard of...he was an incredibly prolific writer of short stories for men's adventure magazines...he wrote hundreds of stories, and in this one you get a really nice selection of different styles. You get war stories, you get gangster stories, there's a Western, a couple of fake "true" stories... All really entertaining short stories of a kind that you just don't see anymore... They feel quite different from modern short stories which tend to be either a bit literary or twist-in-the-tale horror."

Olly couldn't be more on target. What Walter Kaylin had, they're not making anymore. We are proud to play a part in preserving his work, and making it available to new readers.

We've cued Olly's video to his talk on Nymphos, but we encourage you to watch the whole video. His reviews are always worth watching:

ONCE A VAMPIRE: Labor Day Update

Reposted from the Once a Vampire campaign page:

Happy Labor Day! Wyatt here, with a proof-of-life post to thank everyone for their contributions so far to John Amplas' book project (in collaboration with me and Jimmy Angelina), Once a Vampire. Your support of John's book means everything to us.

Got to spend some time with John on a recent trip to Pittsburgh. While there I conducted further interviews with him, as well as documenting a joint conversation between John and actor/broadcaster John Hall, one of his dearest friends going back to their time together in the Pittsburgh theatre scene. Listening to them recount stories and shared history, it seemed anything John (A.) may have forgotten, John (H.) remembers, and is ready to remind him! What a pleasure to be in the company of two lifelong pals who have been through so much together across the decades. I can only hope the book does their friendship justice.

Meanwhile John (Amplas!) has been putting me in touch with other friends and colleagues who have contributed to his story and played a role in his life, and I expect to be conducting more interviews soon. While the book is very much John's story in John's voice, our plan for chapters that deal specifically with his film and theatre projects is to present them in an oral history format, with John's voice joined by the voices of his collaborators to deliver a fuller, more rounded perspective. We're all very excited about it.

More soon. But for now, from me, from Jimmy, and from John, thank you. Please continue to spread the word.

Michael K. Vaughan Reads "Awesome" NYMPHOS for GarbAugust!

BookTuber and critic Michael K. Vaughan is back...and this time he's gotten his hands on Nymphos for GarbAugust!

That's our Walter Kaylin collection, He-Men, Bag Men, & Nymphos, which we recently upgraded from the old black-and-white to a new, expanded, full-color edition.

(What is GarbAugust? I refer you to the event's founder, CriminOlly.)

So how did Nymphos measure up?

"An ultimate GarbAugust book."

"Tremendously entertaining stories...over the top, very violent, probably not the kind of thing you can get away with these days."

"This particular book is great. Not just for the stories, but the illustrations -- great, great stuff."

"The stories live up to the illustrations."

"Fantastic book. Highly recommended -- particularly if you're looking for something for GarbAugust, you can't do better than this. It's just awesome."

Thank you, Michael! We are pleased our Nymphos has satisfied your requirements. We've cued his video to his review:

Mort Künstler Covered V1 Available Now!

The wild, much admired covers of men's adventure magazines (aka MAMs) were absolutely crucial to a magazine's success. Competition on newsstands was fierce, and attention-grabbing cover art and headlines meant everything when it came to persuading readers which MAM would deliver the thrills and excitement they were shopping for. Cover artists had to provide more than just great illustration art; under direction from some of the sharpest art directors in the business, their work had to rise above the visual noise of competing titles displayed side-by-side on store shelves, to rope in readers (and revenue) in a highly competitive and very crowded field.

Often called "America's Artist" for the historically themed paintings and bestselling art prints that defined the latter part of his career, Mort Künstler began his illustration career working in a quite different—but no less American—area of commercial art: MAM covers and interior spreads. During the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, Künstler numbered among the leading creators of artwork for MAMs. In those magazines' pages (and perhaps most importantly, on those covers), his work brought the fantasies and daydreams of mid-century American males to vivid life with rich, explosive color and an enviable sense of scope and grandeur, serving up spectacular depictions of epic action, exotic adventure, hard-boiled crime, survival, and courage on the battlefield.

Collecting an eye-popping array of Künstler's covers for legendary magazines such as Action For Men, Battlefield, and For Men Only, The Men's Adventure Library proudly presents Mort Künstler Covered Volume 1, in full color.

As a bonus, the collection also includes a scene-setting new edit of co-editor Robert Deis's historic 2011 interview with Künstler. This comprehensive conversation marked one of the first and very few occasions the artist spoke at length about his years working in MAM illustration.

Edited by Robert Deis and Wyatt Doyle for The Men's Adventure Library, Mort Künstler Covered Volume 1 is now available in softcover, and as a handsome casewrap hardcover with 20 additional pages of Künstler covers. Both editions measure 8.5" x 11" and are available now.

Support the publisher and buy Mort Künstler Covered Volume 1 from the New Texture Shop, HERE.

PopCult Blog on Gil Cohen's ARCHIVE COLLECTION

Longtime pop culture critic Rudy Panucci of PopCult Blog goes Inside/Out over Gil Cohen's Archive Collection:

"This is work that was created under intense deadline pressure. Yet Cohen’s artistic ability and professionalism shine through. He managed to take deliberately sensational stories, filled with lurid details and PG-rated prurient interests, and illustrate them with beautifully-composed and expertly-delineated flash."

Geeks Love Dogs' Paul Harmon Grabs A HANDFUL OF HELL

"This is, of course, fantastic..."

Thanks to BookTuber Paul Harmon of Geeks Love Dogs, who gets a grip on the Men's Adventure Library's collection of MAM fiction by the late Robert F. Dorr, A Handful of Hell.

This book is differs from some of our other MAM collections in that Dorr's specialty was recounting authentic accounts of battlefield heroism, managing to balance the kind of wild, explosive action the mags' readers demanded with the respect his subjects warranted. While Dorr could write big action and adventure with the very best of his contemporaries (and would go on to a storied career as a writer under his own steam following the MAM era), what sets so much of his work in MAMs apart is not only the writer's gifts for nail-biting adventure storytelling, but his stories' realism and humanity—something not lost on Harmon:

"What's very cool about these is that a lot of them are based on true stories... So if you're a fan of history (and) WWII / Vietnam War-era non-fiction, you get that—with the action told in a way that makes it fun and exciting... It gives you the best of both worlds: history and adventure. Fun to read, and even now, they don't feel dated."

Watch the full review below. Dorr talk begins around 24 minutes in:

Support Your Local Vampire: Crowdfunding John Amplas' Autobiography, ONCE A VAMPIRE

We are very pleased and proud to announce that New Texture's Wyatt Doyle and Jimmy Angelina are collaborating with actor John Amplas (Martin, Day of the Dead) on his autobiography, Once a Vampire.

We are accepting support via GoFundMe to help defray the costs of work on the project.

Here's the pitch:

"For some of us, he's James Dean."

Actor John Amplas is celebrated for his unforgettable performance in the title role of George Romero's 1977 film Martin, as well as his appearances in Creepshow, Knightriders, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. But his own story is every bit as dramatic, unusual, and moving as the parts he's played.

John has enlisted writer Wyatt Doyle and illustrator Jimmy Angelina to help tell his story and bring it into print.

This is an entirely independent project, with no big money behind it. (No small money, either!) It's three guys—John, Wyatt, and Jimmy—creating something from scratch with no outside assistance...except yours.

If you want to read this book, John is asking for your help in making it a reality. Help us get it done! John and Wyatt have already recorded over 20 hours of interviews that will make up the core of the book. Jimmy Angelina has already completed multiple illustrations for the project. But we're at the point where things are starting to cost money, and that's where you come in. Initial expenses include transcription for those interviews and proofreading fees, and soon, marketing/promotional expenses. It all adds up quickly.

This is very much a NO AI project. We support human-generated transcriptions and employ human proofreaders.

Want to help John tell his story? Pitch in with a donation!

This book is happening. We're all fully committed to the project. But with your support, it can happen faster and more easily.

This adventure is only just beginning. Join us.

At GoFundMe's insistence, I must include the statement that no raffles, sweepstakes, giveaways, or promotions are offered in exchange for any donations made.

Who is Wyatt Doyle?
Wyatt Doyle is the writer and artist behind New Texture, a fiercely independent arts collective turned publisher and music label with over 50 releases since 2009. In addition to editing and designing the book for John, he has decades of experience navigating the worlds of book printing and distribution. His books have been acclaimed by numerous critics, including The Washington Post's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Michael Dirda.

His own work includes fiction (Stop Requested, illustrated by Stanley J. Zappa), visual art (The Last Coloring Book, The Last Coloring Book on the Left, and Be Italian with Jimmy Angelina) and photography (Jorge Amaya Doesn't Live Anymore, Dollar Halloween and others).

Through New Texture, he has collaborated with and published authors and artists as diverse as Lawrence Block, Gil Cohen, Byron Coley, John Doe, JD Doyle, Jon E Edwards, Harlan Ellison, Bruce Jay Friedman, Josh Alan Friedman, George Gross, Mort Künstler, Sydney Leff, Lydia Lunch, Eva Lynd, Todd Pierce, Samson Pollen, Robert Silverberg, Georgina Spelvin, and many others. He edits and designs most New Texture releases. You can browse some of the books he's worked on and published on Amazon, HERE.

Who is Jimmy Angelina?
Jimmy Angelina swapped studying filmmaking at Columbia College, in Chicago, for studying visual art at Bennington College, in Vermont—where he graduated with a BA in Drawing/Sculpture. His illustrations have appeared in various publications and on theatre posters. He's taken part in group and solo shows in New York City, San Francisco, Vermont and Louisville, KY.

Latterly, he joined the New Texture publishing collective—where he has collaborated, along with co-author Wyatt Doyle, on three volumes of cult-movie-classic-movie-pop-culture artifact-satire: The Last Coloring Book, The Last Coloring Book on the Left and Be Italian. He provided illustrations for the feature film Rolling Stone: Life and Death of Brian Jones, directed by Danny Garcia. He's also released a (self-titled) CD with New Texture. He is available for freelance work and commissions. He likes books. He likes movies. He likes music. He likes dogs. His work can be seen on his website, www.jimmyangelina.com

Reviews, Reviews, Reviews!

Wow, lots of new reviews coming in for our releases. (Spoiler warning: They are all raves.)

First up, the mighty Paperback Warrior delivers some of the highest praise I think we've received since we launched The Men's Adventure Library series:

"There isn't a duo on Earth more skilled in telling the history of the MAM era than Deis and Doyle. Both have made it their mission to highlight and document this unique, storied tradition of vintage magazines. Both have excelled in presenting coffee table, awe-inspiring volumes that capture the essence of the MAM."

Thanks for that, PW! Like the spectacular Showcase Showdown, we do our part.

From there, PW delves into one of the first copies of  the Archive Collection, the inaugural volume of our Gil Cohen: Inside/Out series. PW comes to Cohen's MAM artwork after being introduced to the artist via his much admired cover paintings for Don Pendleton's Mack Bolan / Executioner series of novels. (We of course published a collection of those paintings as One Man Army, our first collaboration with Gil Cohen.)

"The two have once again created a beautiful coffee table book titled Gil Cohen: Inside/Out - Archive Collection. This is a deluxe, full-color hardcover (150ish pages) featuring Cohen's magazine covers and interior illustrations found in MAMs from the 1950s through the 1970s. I haven't counted them all yet, but according to MensPulpMags.com, there are 160 high-resolution images. Considering MAMs are very rare, this may be one of the only times a casual fan and reader will even see these paintings."

Unfortunately, PW is all too correct about the scarcity of MAMs these days. Were that it were not so!

Sean CW Korsgaard, writing for Analog, reviews Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants. He notes the uneasy relationship some readers of science fiction fans have with men's adventure magazine fiction, but he's a big-table genre reader:

"A beautifully put together book. Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants offers not just an overview of the science fiction of men’s adventure magazines, but some absolutely gripping pulp science fiction that hasn’t been read since the Silver Age. If you’re at all intrigued by a chance to sample some of science fiction’s more salacious and sensational chapters, this is essential reading."

Korsgaard speaks the truth! And if you're a reader of Sword & Sorcery, his new magazine, Battleborn, deserves your attention. Learn more about Battleborn HERE. And read his complete Atomic review HERE.

Finally, Joe Kenney's Glorious Trash blog gets in the water with Maneaters: Killer Sharks in Men's Adventure Magazines, our collection of killer shark stories from the magazines. He says he's not a big reader of shark fiction, but Maneaters delivered for him:

"Compiling a selection of shark-centric tales from the men’s adventure magazines of the 1950s through the 1970s, Maneaters comes highly recommended, and as usual Wyatt Doyle’s presentation of the art is both eye-catching and, more importantly, respectful of its sources."

Though the review seems to attribute some of Wyatt's written contributions to Bob (and he's wrong about the stories' expert commentaries), these are minor quibbles—much as what he dislikes about Maneaters are ultimately minor quibbles for Joe. This is a reader with excellent taste in trashy fiction, and we're glad Maneaters was able to scratch that itch. His recommendation carries weight for us and is appreciated! His review can be read in its entirety HERE.

Thanks to all who take the time to read and offer their thoughts on our work. As ever, we appreciate your thoughts, praise, and criticism.

Gary Lovisi on Gil Cohen's INSIDE/OUT: ARCHIVE COLLECTION

"This book is a literal feast for the eyes...just unbelievable. Beautiful women, fighting men...action packed!"

Gary Lovisi's knowledgeable yet playful video reviews are among my favorites. So when he chooses to discuss one of our books, it's cause for celebration. Charming collaborations between Gary and his wife Lucille, their videos can make me feel like I'm right there with them, talking books with old friends. When we get a thumbs-up from Gary, we know we're doing something right.

"This is a really special book. Just loaded with the best of Gil Cohen's work in the men's adventure magazines... Motorcycle gangs, cannibals, World War II, giant animals attacking people, guys jumping out of planes, Bigfoot... This is a great book. Here's to you, Gil!"

And here's to you, Gary and Lucille! Thank you for your always entertaining videos and continued support of our work.

GIL COHEN: INSIDE/OUT [ARCHIVE COLLECTION] Launches New Cohen Series

Gil Cohen: Inside/Out [Archive Collection] hardcover

"Men’s adventure magazines were a lower market. Let's call them B-movies. Nevertheless, there were exciting things that I did for Stag and Male and For Men Only and all the rest of them. I was proud of it. I wasn't ashamed of it at all. I was very proud of it."      Gil Cohen, artist

Gil Cohen: Inside/Out is a multi-volume odyssey in print, exploring and celebrating the work of artist Gil Cohen. Years in the making, it is the biggest project in the Men’s Adventure Library’s 13-year history.

Gil Cohen. A true master of the form, an artist who’s spent most of his nine decades behind the easel bringing images of action, adventure, intrigue, and heroism to vivid life—for magazines, book covers, and ultimately on fine art gallery walls. There is a generation of readers who fiercely admire his work in the commercial arena, specifically his cover paintings for the Mack Bolan/Executioner series created by Don Pendleton. (Paintings that we featured in our previous collaboration with Gil, the book One Man Army.)

One Man Army: The Action Paperback Art of Gil Cohen,
available in hardcover (pictured) and softcover editions.

Ardent fans contend even Gil’s over 200 covers for The Executioner novels and its spinoff series were too few. But even those fans may have been unaware that by the time Gil was painting Mack’s exploits, he’d already produced hundreds of action and adventure illustrations for print across the three decades men's adventure magazines (aka MAMs) existed. This was frequently astounding work that, incredibly, would go unseen following its initial publication; forgotten by many, unseen by so many more.

Stag, March 1961. Cover by Gil Cohen

These are illustrations that riff on powerful existing tropes in action imagery, sometimes borrowing from them, sometimes stretching them to the limits of plausibility, while other times minting entirely new tropes—innovations that would go on to be reflected in action novels, films, television, and comic books. As we've pointed out more than once, MAMs are something of an invisible hand behind so much modern action adventure in all its forms.

In their era, MAMs' cultural impact ran even deeper. As readers’ daydreams and inner lives took inspiration from the tough and gritty entertainment they enjoyed in MAMs, it is the work of Gil Cohen and his colleagues producing that MAM content who gave readers’ fantasies shape and definition. Their work for MAMs became literally the stuff dreams are made of.

Stag, June 1965; interior spread by Gil Cohen

So how do literally hundreds of illustrations of this caliber and appeal disappear for decades? Blame the shifting cultural sands of the post-MAM era. MAMs, with their unapologetic emphasis on two-fisted action and sex, were eventually seen as outdated and “old guard” by a younger generation who didn’t appreciate what they saw as MAMs’ points of view.

Even as the nostalgia boom of the 1960s and 1970s resurrected a variety of other vintage interests and diversions that had fallen out of step, MAMs were still on newsstands then, and not yet ripe for reappraisal. They had to go away to be missed. It didn’t help that the magazines themselves were popular but not hotly collected in their time. Almost no one held on to them. Like the now-classic comic books that break new auction records every year, MAMs were considered disposable entertainment, to be read and tossed before the next issue hit the stands.

Male, April 1966; interior spread by Gil Cohen

Our mission with the Men’s Adventure Library series is to help increase awareness of the MAM era by reissuing the cream of the many lost stories and illustration artwork of the original magazines. Gil Cohen is precisely the kind of artist whose mid-century work the Men’s Adventure Library was established to celebrate.

In his MAM years (the mid-1950s through the mid-’70s), Cohen proved equally adept at creating both compelling interior illustrations and arresting cover art (which, as veteran illustrators confirm, are two distinct and different skill sets). One of the most prolific artists working in MAMs, Cohen had to be versatile and inventive in his compositions and renderings, as MAM illustrations (particularly covers) pulled dual duty, both serving the stories they were created to accompany, while also catching readers’ attention on shop shelves, where competing MAMs tended to be every bit as big, colorful, and assertive in their salesmanship.

Stag, December 1971; interior spread by Gil Cohen

Unexplored, Unreprinted, Unseen

Cohen’s latter-day aviation art is highly collected and justly acclaimed, putting him into fine art collections all over the world. But his magazine work—an essential aspect of his career—has gone unexplored, as his decades of work in MAMs have gone unreprinted and therefore almost entirely unseen since their original publication, decades ago. If you don’t own the magazines, you’ve almost certainly had no opportunity to explore this profoundly significant aspect of Cohen’s career. And if you didn’t own the magazines then, you can be sure you’ll need a small fortune to assemble a collection now.

Fortunately, the Men’s Adventure Library’s Robert Deis is one of the world’s leading collectors of vintage MAMs. The volumes that comprise the Inside/Out series are unprecedented dives into the career of a master of illustration art. The series goes deep, reproducing covers as well as color, duotone, and monochrome interior magazine spreads, as they appeared in print between 1954 and 1976.

Men, January 1964; cover by Gil Cohen

There can be no doubt the Inside/Out books are the definitive presentation of Gil Cohen’s work in MAMs.

Working closely with the Artist, a wide selection of original art is also included, drawn from Cohen’s personal archives and from the collections of leading illustration art collectors. And, transcribed from hours of candid conversation and interviews, are Cohen’s comments on the work, the magazines, and the era are woven throughout all three of the subsequent volumes. All that is still to come.

But first... the Archive Collection.

A carefully curated introduction to the Gil Cohen era of MAMs, via the archives of a legendary collection: The Robert Deis Archive, bedrock of the Men’s Adventure Library. If there’s another MAM collection in the world like it, its owner isn’t talking! Deis’s collection, known for its tremendous size and sweeping scope, has supplied source material for every book in the Men’s Adventure Library, not to mention years of informative blog posts and articles for magazines and websites.

With that kind of enviable resource at the project’s disposal, we begin our Inside/Out series with the Archive Collection, a preliminary survey spanning the entirety of Cohen’s career in MAMs, reproduced and restored from the Deis Archive’s source copies of the original magazines.

Argosy, May 1963; interior spread by Gil Cohen

In the Archive Collection, you’ll encounter Cohen’s artistry as MAM readers did decades ago: On its own terms. Page after page of Cohen illustrations as they originally appeared in print, complete with the outrageous titles and headlines MAMs are infamous for. There's not much talk—we're saving that for the main installments—but you'll find plenty of action. Explosive, old-school action. There could be no better herald for the subsequent volumes than this initial overview.

We've also elevated our production standards for this once-in-a-lifetime illustration art event. Printed on 70-pound white paper (for comparison, copier paper tends to be 20 pound) and utilizing the highest quality reproduction our printer offers, Gil Cohen: Inside/Out will be the most luxurious volumes the Men’s Adventure Library has yet issued, starting with the Archive Collection.

2026 is shaping up to be Gil Cohen's year.

Best of the Year: The Book Graveyard Digs WEASELS!

The Book Graveyard's Grounds Keeper Nick Anderson rates Weasels Ripped My Flesh! as one of the best reads of 2025!

"This one is special. What you have here is a buffet...a sampling of all the types of stories [in the mags]... Some adventure, some horror, lots of action, war stories... Go check it out. If you're interested in the genre, it's a great place to start."

Nick's comments on all his picks are worth hearing, but the Weasels talk starts around 1:10. Please note: the goofy AI voice that is the video's default is NOT our noble Grounds Keeper. To hear the real Nick, be sure to click the video's SETTINGS wheel and change the AUDIO TRACK setting from ENGLISH (US) to SPANISH (US) (ORIGINAL). (It's not actually in Spanish.) Nick explains the situation in the video's comments section, but that's how to hear the video as intended.

WEASELS Makes Vaughan's Top 10 of 2025

BookTuber Michael K. Vaughan has turned loose a list of his Top 10 Favorite Books of 2025. Did any New Texture titles make the cut?

Well, the adorable weasel accompanying him in his video's cover photo is most definitely a clue...

"This is my first time reading this stuff, and it's amazing. I highly recommend this one."

A newcomer to MAM fiction, Vaughan read WEASELS as part of GarbAugust, and spoke at greater length on the book in his post at the time. Click HERE to watch that one.

Many thanks to Michael for his kind words and vocal support, and Happy Holidays to all our readers!

Steve Carroll Writes Gets Weird With ATOMIC WEREWOLVES

"Quite simply, spectacular."

In a season of weird doings, Steve Carroll Writes braves an exploration of The Men's Adventure Library anthology, Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants:

The book itself is simply gorgeous... Lavishly illustrated with many covers reproduced in full color, this is essentially a coffee table book dedicated to “when men’s adventure magazines got weird,” as the cover’s subtitle aptly describes. All in all, this book is an effort of pure love for the genre.

Bob Deis and Wyatt Doyle have put together yet another archive of great worth, both for collectors and fans. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough and would go on record that it is essential to the preservation of the historic MAM as a uniquely American literary institution.

Steve's review takes readers through the collection with story by story commentary. Read his thoughts in full at Steve Carroll Writes, HERE.

Edited by Robert Deis and Wyatt Doyle, Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants is part of the Men's Adventure Library series, and is available now in softcover and as an expanded hardcover with bonus material. Buy it HERE.

Great Minds: Two Takes on I WATCHED THEM EAT ME ALIVE

BookTubers—readers and critics who share their reading and opinions on YouTube—have quickly become some of the best (and most entertaining) resources online for those who embrace the wild, the obscure, and the strange in fiction.

In short, our kind of people.

Tim from Secret Fire Books and Jeff from Jeff's Cave of Cool Books both recently posted their thoughts on The Men's Adventure Library's I Watched Them Eat Me Alive collection, and while it's safe to say they both enjoyed the book equally, their videos discussing it make for an appealing contrast.

Jeff aptly describes Deis' and Doyle's pair of introductions to the book (subtitled Two Takes on Killer Creatures in Men's Adventure Mags) as "two takes, but they are not in opposition, just complimenting each other." The same might be said of these two BookTubers' approach to the same book.

Tim at Secret Fire Books was the first to post his thoughts. Tim's got a big personality, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic bookshopping pal who wants to make sure you don't miss the good stuff as you navigate the stacks. He takes the viewer through some of the books' highlights, offering fun commentary on stories (and especially the artwork) that fills the book.

"It's gorgeous, I love it so much. So freakin' cool... Robert and Wyatt have been doing a great job with The Men's Adventure Library. This was fantastic!"

Tim reviews the hardcover edition, which includes additional content the softcover does not. Watch Secret Fire Books' video HERE.

Tim from Secret Fire Books

Jeff from Jeff's Cave of Cool Books reviews the softcover edition. He has a low-key style and takes a different approach, providing an in-depth page-through that explores the book from cover to cover, commenting in detail not only on the book's stories and artwork, but on The Men's Adventure Library more broadly, alerting viewers to our other books that Eat Me references in its text.

Jeff from Jeff's Book Cave

Jeff really gets what we're trying to do, both in Eat Me specifically, as well as our broader goals for The Men's Adventure Library. We try to bake in little clues and cues in our books to reward regular readers of the series, and I think Jeff caught all of them. Watch Jeff's Cave of Cool Books' video HERE.

It's a rewarding thing to have your work reviewed and analyzed by readers who bring such sincere enthusiasm and appreciation for our efforts. These guys read a lot of books in this area, and it's meaningful to know they are digging what we do.

Our thanks to Tim and Jeff, and to all the BookTubers who embrace what we do and help spread the word about it.

I Watched Them Eat Me Alive is available from Amazon as a 120-page softcover and 128-page expanded hardcover HERE.

Kaylin's NYMPHOS: Now in Color, Expanded Hard- and Softcover Editions

He-Men, Bag Men, & Nymphos collects highlights of Walter Kaylin's work for MAMs. It is now back in print from The Men's Adventure Library in bold new color editions, expanded from the out-of-print monochrome first edition. We are proud to present the book for the first time in color and celebrate the book's deluxe hardcover debut.

But who was Walter Kaylin? Simple. Walter Kaylin was the MAM writer other MAM writers wanted to be.

Kaylin had an innate understanding of the highly specific needs of MAM fiction, and his work in the field across decades would help define the unique genre. But that once-in-a-career symbiosis came at a price: For decades, those musty, obscure magazines—most now well over half a century old, with copies hard to come by—have provided the sole portal to the majority of Kaylin’s prodigious output.

Our priorities for the He-Men, Bag Men, & Nymphos collection were to present a selection of some of Kaylin’s most memorable stories, while also covering as many MAM obsessions and sub-genres as could reasonably fit between covers. You’ll read Kaylin takes on hard-boiled crime, Westerns, dark historical fiction, tropical adventure, revolutionary battle, alarmist non-fiction, a WWII “death trek” saga, reality-based survival, varied approaches to international espionage and intrigue, bogus biography, gangsters, humorous tall tales with a wartime theme and a sexy bent, and, in the new expanded hardcover edition, a highly unconventional animal attack story.

Our initial edition of this collection suffered from spotty distribution, making it less accessible to readers of what would become our acclaimed, multi-volume Men’s Adventure Library series. We also didn’t previously issue a hardcover, as has since become standard for the Library. We’re glad to put those issues right with these new, color editions, which include supplementary illustrations and commentary that further illuminate the range and quantity of Kaylin’s work in MAMs.

Includes a reminiscence by Kaylin's editor at Magazine Management Company, Bruce Jay Friedman.

"Masters of MAMs": Wyatt Doyle at PulpFest 2025

Thanks to the kindness of fellow multi-hyphenate Sean CW Korsgaard, we're very pleased to share Wyatt Doyle's talk from PulpFest 2025: "Masters of MAMs." It's a brief overview of some of men's adventure magazines' (MAMs) leading lights from across their three decades of publication, with some explanation of why we believe they are important.

You can watch the whole 45-minute presentation via the embedded video above, or go directly to each subject by clicking their name below.

Big thanks also to Bill Lampkin, Mike Chomko, and Jack Cullers for their heroic work keeping PulpFest alive and thriving every year.

Michael K. Vaughan Picks WEASELS and NYMPHOS for GarbAugust!

"One must read Weasels Ripped My Flesh! for GarbAugust. One simply must."

Thanks to our friends at Paperback Warrior, popular book vlogger Michael K. Vaughan is now the very happy owner of two of two deluxe hardcover editions from The Men's Adventure Library: Walter Kaylin's He-Men, Bag Men, & Nymphos, and Weasels Ripped My Flesh!

As you'll see in his July Book Mail video post below (titled "Weasels Ate My Postman"!), Vaughan couldn't be happier to receive the books, and immediately adds them to his GarbAugust reading list.

(What is GarbAugust? I refer you to the event's founder, CriminOlly.)

Michael, we can't wait to hear what you think of the books once you've tackled them...presuming you make it out in one piece.

Big thanks to Michael and to Paperback Warrior!

Lawrence Block's THE NAKED AND THE DEADLY in deluxe softcover

Reissuing Lawrence Block's long-lost work for men's adventure magazines in the Men's Adventure Library collection The Naked and the Deadly is a milestone for the series, and a considerable source of great pride for us.

We had two primary goals for the project: First, to issue Block's work in the kind of deluxe presentation it deserves. Second, to try to ensure that the book's sticker price would allow anyone who wants to read the book the opportunity to own a copy—even readers on tighter budgets.

So we issued the book in multiple editions: A deluxe signed and numbered hardcover, and a deluxe (unsigned) hardcover, both printed in full color and packed with supplementary history, context, and illustrations.

We also put together a relatively no-frills ebook edition, and a compact mass market paperback edition—both focused on the stories alone.

But we are so wild about the hardcover presentations, we decided to issue another edition: a softcover that (mostly) replicates the contents and design of the hardcovers: a deluxe softcover edition.

Priced at $29.95 for a big 368 color pages, it's $16 less than the hardcover, but includes everything that's in the hardcover—minus the hardcover's bonus story.

It's been available for a while now. The problem is, many of our readers buy our books from Amazon, and Amazon doesn't seem to know what to do with a title that's been released in two softcover editions—despite the many differences between those softcover editions. Even searching for the deluxe softcover on Amazon can be a frustrating experience.

So, here's a direct link to the deluxe softcover on Amazon: https://amzn.to/41W23fl

Of course, copies are always available from the book's co-editor Bob Deis via his webstore at MensPulpMags.com. Bob often offers deals and discounts on all our books there, and he's always glad to sign or personalize books on request. Order directly from Bob by clicking HERE.
