CriminOlly Concludes His GarbAugust With NYMPHOS!

CriminOlly has titled his latest round of book reviews, "One of these is the worst book I've read for ages..." So let's get this out of the way first: our Men's Adventure Library release of Walter Kaylin's He-Men, Bag Men, & Nymphos collection, which is reviewed in his current video, is NOT that book! Au contraire. Per Olly:

"As always, they (The Men's Adventure Library) did a fantastic job with it. This is a beautifully presented book."

Whew! And he doesn't stop there. In fact, he hits on something in Kaylin's work that I have long felt makes our Men's Adventure Library books so special: 

"Walter Kaylin is almost certainly an author you haven't heard of...he was an incredibly prolific writer of short stories for men's adventure magazines...he wrote hundreds of stories, and in this one you get a really nice selection of different styles. You get war stories, you get gangster stories, there's a Western, a couple of fake "true" stories... All really entertaining short stories of a kind that you just don't see anymore... They feel quite different from modern short stories which tend to be either a bit literary or twist-in-the-tale horror." 

Olly couldn't be more on target. What Walter Kaylin had, they're not making anymore. We are proud to play a part in preserving his work, and making it available to new readers.

ONCE A VAMPIRE: Labor Day Update

Happy Labor Day! Wyatt here, with a proof-of-life post to thank everyone for their contributions so far to John Amplas' book project (in collaboration with me and Jimmy Angelina), Once a Vampire. Your support of John's book means everything to us. 

Got to spend some time with John on a recent trip to Pittsburgh. While there I conducted further interviews with him, as well as documenting a joint conversation between John and actor/broadcaster John Hall, one of his dearest friends going back to their time together in the Pittsburgh theatre scene. Listening to them recount stories and shared history, it seemed anything John (A.) may have forgotten, John (H.) remembers, and is ready to remind him! What a pleasure to be in the company of two lifelong pals who have been through so much together across the decades. I can only hope the book does their friendship justice. 

Meanwhile John (Amplas!) has been putting me in touch with other friends and colleagues who have contributed to his story and played a role in his life, and I expect to be conducting more interviews soon. While the book is very much John's story in John's voice, our plan for chapters that deal specifically with his film and theatre projects is to present them in an oral history format, with John's voice joined by the voices of his collaborators to deliver a fuller, more rounded perspective. We're all very excited about it.

Mort Künstler Covered V1 Available Now!

The wild, much admired covers of men's adventure magazines (aka MAMs) were absolutely crucial to a magazine's success. Competition on newsstands was fierce, and attention-grabbing cover art and headlines meant everything when it came to persuading readers which MAM would deliver the thrills and excitement they were shopping for. Cover artists had to provide more than just great illustration art; under direction from some of the sharpest art directors in the business, their work had to rise above the visual noise of competing titles displayed side-by-side on store shelves, to rope in readers (and revenue) in a highly competitive and very crowded field. 

Often called "America's Artist" for the historically themed paintings and bestselling art prints that defined the latter part of his career, Mort Künstler began his illustration career working in a quite different—but no less American—area of commercial art: MAM covers and interior spreads. During the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, Künstler numbered among the leading creators of artwork for MAMs. In those magazines' pages (and perhaps most importantly, on those covers), his work brought the fantasies and daydreams of mid-century American males to vivid life with rich, explosive color and an enviable sense of scope and grandeur, serving up spectacular depictions of epic action, exotic adventure, hard-boiled crime, survival, and courage on the battlefield.

Video Memories of PulpFest 2026

Another PulpFest in the books (ahem!), and as always, it was all over much too quickly. It's a special place, and I think The Book Graveyard's Groundskeeper Nick Anderson summed it up eloquently in his opening comments to his pre-PulpFest interview with chairman Jack Cullers. I've cued the clip to Nick's comments:

"It's a beautiful thing to be a part of." Absolutely true!

YouTuber Rock Savage stopped by the New Texture table asking a question that, in more literate times, was a conversation starter at parties: What was the last book you read?

What I should have said was, "It wasn't Christopher Nolan's Odyssey movie that inspired me to read it. It was Ralph Fiennes' Odyssey movie, The Return!" (Highly recommended, by the way.)

Gary Lovisi has been reviewing Men's Adventure Library releases pretty much since we started releasing them, and he's been very kind to our books. His review videos are not only informative, but thanks to the presence of his wife (and camera operator) Lucille, Lovisi videos are among the most charming as well.

I've cued his video to our meeting (our first in person!), and my somewhat starstruck response to appearing on the Lovisi cam after years as a viewer is sincere.

Lee Charlton, aka The Retired Book Guy, is a recent addition to the ranks of BookTubers covering PulpFest. He hung out for a bit talking MAM art and artists. He picked up our Mort Künstler collections at the show, and promises a fuller video review of both books is in the offing. I'll look forward to that, and will share it here when he posts it.

Finally, we circle back to Nick from The Book Graveyard, who dropped by the table to chat and see what Men's Adventure Library titles were getting the most attention this year:

When There Was Still Time 

before we pulled the membranes off
the grapes, our eyeballs were still tight
in our faces. We looked silently 
at each other and pondered our moms
one of whom had asked the other 
for a quarter ounce of oregano
in a sandwich bag — then she handed 
it to us. Did they know about our 
seasoning hobby? Really, how could
they not? Was this a joke, a test 
of some sort? It was summer.
We were going out soon to explore
the park across the street and look
at things through our new pair 
of green eyeballs — but at that moment
at the kitchen table, with the oregano 
in the sandwich bag, and the grapes 
still membraned, the air conditioner 
weeping was something we couldn’t 
understand or perceive. The air —
even existence itself — smelled

Geeks Love Dogs' Paul Harmon Grabs A HANDFUL OF HELL

"This is, of course, fantastic..."

Thanks to BookTuber Paul Harmon of Geeks Love Dogs, who gets a grip on the Men's Adventure Library's collection of MAM fiction by the late Robert F. Dorr, A Handful of Hell.

This book is differs from some of our other MAM collections in that Dorr's specialty was recounting authentic accounts of battlefield heroism, managing to balance the kind of wild, explosive action the mags' readers demanded with the respect his subjects warranted. While Dorr could write big action and adventure with the very best of his contemporaries (and would go on to a storied career as a writer under his own steam following the MAM era), what sets so much of his work in MAMs apart is not only the writer's gifts for nail-biting adventure storytelling, but his stories' realism and humanity—something not lost on Harmon:

"What's very cool about these is that a lot of them are based on true stories... So if you're a fan of history (and) WWII / Vietnam War-era non-fiction, you get that—with the action told in a way that makes it fun and exciting... It gives you the best of both worlds: history and adventure. Fun to read, and even now, they don't feel dated."

Actor John Amplas is celebrated for his unforgettable performance in the title role of George Romero's 1977 film Martin, as well as his appearances in Creepshow, Knightriders, Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead. But his own story is every bit as dramatic, unusual, and moving as the parts he's played.

John has enlisted writer Wyatt Doyle and illustrator Jimmy Angelina to help tell his story and bring it into print.

This is an entirely independent project, with no big money behind it. (No small money, either!) It's three guys—John, Wyatt, and Jimmy—creating something from scratch with no outside assistance...except yours.

Wow, lots of new reviews coming in for our releases. (Spoiler warning: They are all raves.)

First up, the mighty Paperback Warrior delivers some of the highest praise I think we've received since we launched The Men's Adventure Library series: 

"There isn't a duo on Earth more skilled in telling the history of the MAM era than Deis and Doyle. Both have made it their mission to highlight and document this unique, storied tradition of vintage magazines. Both have excelled in presenting coffee table, awe-inspiring volumes that capture the essence of the MAM."

Thanks for that, PW! Like the spectacular Showcase Showdown, we do our part.

From there, PW delves into one of the first copies of  the Archive Collection, the inaugural volume of our Gil Cohen: Inside/Out series. PW comes to Cohen's MAM artwork after being introduced to the artist via his much admired cover paintings for Don Pendleton's Mack Bolan / Executioner series of novels. (We of course published a collection of those paintings as One Man Army, our first collaboration with Gil Cohen.)

"The two have once again created a beautiful coffee table book titled Gil Cohen: Inside/Out - Archive Collection. This is a deluxe, full-color hardcover (150ish pages) featuring Cohen's magazine covers and interior illustrations found in MAMs from the 1950s through the 1970s. I haven't counted them all yet, but according to MensPulpMags.com, there are 160 high-resolution images. Considering MAMs are very rare, this may be one of the only times a casual fan and reader will even see these paintings."

Sean CW Korsgaard, writing for Analog, reviews Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants. He notes the uneasy relationship some readers of science fiction fans have with men's adventure magazine fiction, but he's a big-table genre reader: 

"A beautifully put together book. Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants offers not just an overview of the science fiction of men’s adventure magazines, but some absolutely gripping pulp science fiction that hasn’t been read since the Silver Age. If you’re at all intrigued by a chance to sample some of science fiction’s more salacious and sensational chapters, this is essential reading."

Finally, Joe Kenney's Glorious Trash blog gets in the water with Maneaters: Killer Sharks in Men's Adventure Magazines, our collection of killer shark stories from the magazines. He says he's not a big reader of shark fiction, but Maneaters delivered for him:

"Compiling a selection of shark-centric tales from the men’s adventure magazines of the 1950s through the 1970s, Maneaters comes highly recommended, and as usual Wyatt Doyle’s presentation of the art is both eye-catching and, more importantly, respectful of its sources." 

Though the review seems to attribute some of Wyatt's written contributions to Bob (and he's wrong about the stories' expert commentaries), these are minor quibbles—much as what he dislikes about Maneaters are ultimately minor quibbles for Joe. This is a reader with excellent taste in trashy fiction, and we're glad Maneaters was able to scratch that itch. His recommendation carries weight for us and is appreciated!
