Overview:

Explore Texas’ pivotal placement in LGBTQ+ American history with footage from the vaults of Texas Archive of the Moving Image!

In the 1980s, Houston, Texas earned a new nickname — the “Gay Capital of the South” due to its prominence as an LGBTQ+ hub for activists, artists, night life, and more.

Utilizing stunning archival footage spanning from the 1970s to the early 2000s from the Texas Archive of the Moving Image, we’ll explore Texas’ pivotal placement in LGBTQ+ American history through the lens of three core themes: Activism, Identity, and Queer Joy. Enriched by a panel of historical experts, experience with your own eyes how Houston’s LGBTQ+ community has always been on the forefront of social change through eye witness reporting and detailed news coverage.

JD Doyle Returns to Houston's LGBTQ+ Indie Author Fair, August 1

Yay, it's time for the Houston LGBTQ+ Book Fair. It was organized by author John Merullo, who did a great job last year. I admit last year I was skeptical of whether it would bring people out. Well, I was surprised and impressed. I sold out of all the books I brought by 2:30pm, so I was delighted. Bravo, John!

The Second Annual Houston LGBTQ+ Independent Author Fair will be held at The Montrose Center, 401 Branard Street in Houston on Saturday, August 1, from 10 am to 3 pm.

Since JD sold through his stock of books so quickly last time, we recommend you drop by early!

Join New Texture's JD Doyle at Houston's LGBTQ+ Indie Author Fair, Saturday August 2! He'll be signing and selling copies of his acclaimed memoir, 1981—My Gay American Road Trip.

Local independent LGBTQ+ authors from the Houston Metro Area will be selling and signing their books. This is a great way to discover new writers and new books while support local LGBTQ+ authors. 

The event will be held at The Montrose Center, 401 Branard St in Houston, TX, from 11 am til 5 pm.

"It's at ODU (Old Dominion University) on Tuesday, February 27 at 6 pm. I will be joined by panelists Scott Wyatt and Charles Ford to discuss gay life in Norfolk and the surrounding areas in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Hey, Scott's in the book!

JD has created an amazing archive of LGBTQ songs, artists, and Houston notables that has been cataloged by the US Library of Congress because it is such an exhaustive history of our LGBTQ culture. Today our main topic is his new book, 1981: My Gay American Road Trip. You all know I love me a good road trip and this book has it all; over 140 pictures, 300 pages and 28 states. It's a great read and snapshot into the early pre-AIDS panic, with a powerful postscript about the effects of the deadly virus since then."

QMH Press Joins New Texture

We are pleased and deeply proud to ring in Pride Month with the announcement of a civil partnership between JD Doyle's newly minted QMH Press and New Texture for the release of JD's first book, 1981—My Gay American Road Trip. The book will be the imprints' first joint release, appearing in hardcover and softcover editions from QMH and NT later this month.  

JD Doyle, an American LGBT music/history archivist and radio producer, was formerly Editor of Our Own Community Press, a gay newspaper based out of Norfolk, Virginia. Doyle later produced the radio programs Queer Music Heritage on the station KPFT, and OutRadio, heard online. His currently active works include the Texas Obituary Project and the Houston LGBT History website, all part of his 501(c)(3) non-profit, the JD Doyle Archives. Those archives also contain one of the largest collections of queer music in the country. In 2019, the United States Library of Congress selected the archives for digital inclusion in their collection of LGBT history. 

Doyle believes that history exists to be shared, not hoarded, and strives to make his collection accessible to all. 

His work has been honored by numerous awards, such as the Legacy Award from the Greater Houston LGBT Chamber of Commerce (2023); Trailblazer Award from Texas Conference on Digital Libraries (2021); a Proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner during LGBT History Month (October 2022) naming it “JD Doyle Day;” from the Houston LGBTQ Political Caucus, given the Lifetime Achievement Award (2019) and Kristen Capps Social Conscience Award (2021); Legacy Community Health Mint Julep Award (2023); Male Grand Marshal for the 2014 Houston Pride Parade; and the Alan Bérubé Prize, from the Committee on LGBT History (2012).
