The book itself is simply gorgeous... Lavishly illustrated with many covers reproduced in full color, this is essentially a coffee table book dedicated to “when men’s adventure magazines got weird,” as the cover’s subtitle aptly describes. All in all, this book is an effort of pure love for the genre.

Bob Deis and Wyatt Doyle have put together yet another archive of great worth, both for collectors and fans. I cannot recommend this collection highly enough and would go on record that it is essential to the preservation of the historic MAM as a uniquely American literary institution.

The selection of stories varied from genre to genre on a roller coaster ride of quality. The names you know and love already hit it out of the park. There was lots of schlocky fun, too. And maybe a couple stinkers? But to be honest, even when I didn’t enjoy the story, it was an appropriate inclusion in that it gave you more of an understanding of the output of MAMs. And as someone who is obsessed with era atmosphere, on this it delivered.

I love all of the output from Men’s Adventure Library and this is no exception. Highly recommended.

"You get stories about vampire bats, vampire tarantulas, giant lizards, man-eating trees (by Robert Moore Williams, the veteran SF and Western pulpster), devil worshippers, virgin sacrifices, crazed chicken choppers (a truly weird but good story), mad doctors, evil Nazis (but I repeat myself), and a really good Korean War/Civil War story that reminded me of the great Haunted Tank comic book series. Add some fine essays and introductions by Mike Chomko, Stefan Dziemianowicz, and editors Deis and Doyle, and you’ve got one of the best volumes so far in the Men’s Adventure Library. I had a wonderful time reading Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants, and I give it a very high recommendation."

This summer, The Men's Adventure Library gets weird.

The new collection—the 18th in the acclaimed series—is Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants: When Men's Adventure Magazines Got Weird. Authors include HP Lovecraft, Theodore Sturgeon, Manly Wade Wellman, Gardner Fox, and many more.
